This is so funny that I had to share it. My latest assignment for my art class involves carrying around a 2x4 piece of wood for 24 hours. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, I'm basically hauling around a piece of wood that's about 2"x4"x8'.
Yup, EIGHT FEET.
I started the project four hours ago, and so far it's been relatively uneventful since it's the middle of the night. I just got back from the bathroom, actually, where I did my business and washed up for bed. Not easy to get an 8-foot-long piece of wood into a toilet stall, I can tell you. I had a relatively hard time walking with it earlier, as well. It's rather unwieldy, and it's easy to bang the wood into things especially when going around corners and curves. The "back end" of the wood looks a little tattered now, sadly.
I've named it Janus, because the two wider faces of the plank are rather different. When I first picked it up at the classroom, I saw what looked like a perfectly formed plank with few blemishes. Then I picked it up and saw what looked like a long gash that took out one of the corners. It's like a very long, dark scar. There are also blue and red stains, but all the planks have those colored stains. I spontaneously decided that this plank would be mine. I knew that if given the choice, most would go after the most perfect plank, as I did at first. But I'm growing to love that dark marking even as I'm sitting here typing. The mottled hues are entrancing, and the patterns are much more interesting and unpredictable compared to the regular grain of the wood.
You may be wondering why our class has such an assignment. Well, there are several answers. One is simply to get acquainted with the wood, and one's artmaking materials. Another is that the act of walking with a 2x4 for 24 hours is performance art. One could make a statement by doing such a thing. Why would a person walk around with an eight-foot plank? I'm still trying to figure that our myself. This class, 3-D Foundations, has been expanding my boundaries and concepts about
what art is. I've learned that a sculpture, or 3-D art form is not limited to clay or carvings or stonework. Art is the world we live in. It can be every action a person makes. The idea for an artwork transcends paper and stone, and becomes truly alive. Living and breathing. It is living tied by a rope to another person for a year, taking a walk and seeing junk as national monuments, and stalking a different stranger every day. We have discussed drawings and sculptures one would find in museums as well, but the pieces that stick with me are the performance pieces. Some are so extreme. Imagine practicing self amputation to the point that you die, or crucifying yourself on the hood of a car. The idea makes me squeamish, but I also wonder what these artists are trying to tell us.
So, I have yet to find my purpose for this project. Actually, maybe you guys can help me. I have to document my 24 hours with Janus in some way, and maybe one way I can do that is through the comments I get on this journal. If you could leave a comment regarding your thoughts on what I have (ineloquently) written, I would be very thankful. I suspect that this project will be very much about my interactions with other people as I carry Janus around.
Ah, here's a copy of the assignment for those of you who want to read it:
This two-part assignment is designed to help you get familiar with the material of wood It is also intended as an introduction to the woodshop through making something from your 2x4. You will be given one 8' long 2x4 piece of lumber. The first part of this assignment is to spend 24 consecutive hours with your 2x4. This means that you take your 2x4 with you where ever you go. You do not let it out of your sight. Sleep with it, watch TV with it. Let your 2x4 help you with your homework. Document your time with your 2x4. Name your 2x4. Think of things that you can do together such taking as a quiet walk on the beach or listening to your favorite music. Keep a 2x4 journal of the things that happen, what you learn and most importantly begin to think about what you are going to make with your piece of wood when you start working it in the woodshop. You can brainstorm about ideas in your section.
This brings us to the 2nd part of this project. Use the entire 2x4 in the making. You can also use connective materials such as nails, twine or glue. You can do anything from reducing the 2x4 to a pile of sawdust and then packing empty casings to make sawdust vitamins; try to build a piece of furniture which is extremely challenging w/one piece of wood; to creating wooden body extensions, abstract sculptural work, pick up sticks or a carved shaman's staff. The choice is up to you. Try to think of what you would like to do in relation to spending time with the wood. Everything speaks.I have a feeling that I will get attached to Janus, and become unwilling to change him. Though I am also wondering what he will become. How will Janus mature and develop? How will his interactions and relationships with other people change as a result? I guess we will see at the end of the 24 hours. Though at the moment, I'm wrapping him in a fleece blanket so that he can sleep as well, hahahaha.
